HBO's Diamond in the Rough
Perhaps one of my favourite HBO shows besides Entourage (RIP) and Curb, Bored to Death has an incredibly talented cast that manages to strike the right balance between fantasy and reality, all with a comedic twist. Writer-turned-unlicensed private investigator Jonathan Ames is disillusioned and devastated when his longtime girlfriend leaves him on account of his excessive drinking and marijuana use. Deciding he needs some excitement in his life, his decided to post an ad on Craigslist offering services as a private investigator. At first, his missions are simple: finding a missing sibling, locating and deleting embarrassing pictures that could threaten a man's reputation and career. However, as the seasons progress, the missions become wackier with each episode.
As for the cast, George (Ted Danson) plays Jonathan's (Jason Schwartzman) boss at Edition Magazine, where Jonathan is freelancing in between writing novels. George is also Jonathan's confidante and acts as a father figure throughout the series. Ray (Zach Galifianakis) is Jonathan's best friend who is also close to George. He is a cartoonist who has achieved some success in the Brooklyn area, specifically with the underground comic book loving teens. Once the two discover Jonathan's double life, they eventually begin to accompany him on nearly all his jobs, oftentimes having a near-death experience, a run-in with local mobsters, and have even been wanted for murder by the police.
Although the show has a niche audience, the phenomenal and pointedly witty dialogue is what keeps the show afloat. The pretty shots of the New York City and Brooklyn streets also elevate the "wack-factor", as the three amigos use the city as their playground.
